Meetings might be killing your team’s productivity

Worn out from unproductive meeting

Ironically, meetings are the curse of a manager’s existence as one management school of thought would put it. By design, meetings are supposed to actually make the team more productive. Share ideas, discuss issues, develop plans and unleashed a prepared army to storm the field and conquer for the company. But it doesn’t always work that way. Actually, it never works that way.

Thomas Sowell once said, “People who enjoy meetings should not be in charge of anything.” Meetings are a huge issue for businesses. According to the TAB survey, while most business owners spend 20% of their time in in-person meetings, only 4% believe their meetings are 100% percent productive. That is a wide margin showing clearly how unproductive most meetings are. Andrew Grove, former CEO of Intel, says it is terrible for managers to spend more than 25% of their time in mission critical meetings. As important as they are, they kill productivity. What about regular meetings?

Meetings are not a total drab if you can optimize them. Here are very simple steps to have great meetings:

  1. Prepare an agenda and send it to all participants ahead of time. This will enable them prepare ahead of time and be more in tune with the meeting.
  2. Start on time and end on time. They may be your subordinates, but they have jobs to do to meet targets and keep the company running. Do not keep them longer than necessary.
  3. End with an action plan. Everyone should walk out of the meeting with a sense of duty and clear actions they are expected to carry out.

Overall team productivity will improve when you can optimize meetings and keep everyone focused. Let us know the strategies you use to get the best out of your meetings.

  1. Hi! Quick question that’s totally off topic. Do you know how to
make your site mobile friendly? My web site looks weird when browsing from my iphone.
I’m trying to find a template or plugin that might be able
to fix this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share.

    Thank you!

  2. Hello! I’ve been reading your site for some time now and finally
got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from Lubbock Tx!
Just wanted to mention keep up the great job!

  3. Hello this is somewhat of off topic but I was wondering if blogs
use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted
to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  4. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I
find this matter to be really something which I think I would
never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me.
I am looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of
    it!
