Time management in the workplace has become a concern for most workplace related professionals. The corporate culture is revolutionizing for the past few decades and the typical nine to five office hours have been found out to cause phenomenon like burnout and work stress. In these situations, the entire foundation of the organizational structure has to be reconsidered.
Time management is also the top priority in the major circles of workplace management. For all human resource related professionals, time management strategies have is target oriented. The target for most employers is productivity. Productivity can be achieved if the reduction of two workplace phenomenon are understood properly; workplace flexibility and reactivity.
Difference Between Flexibility and Reactivity:
The difference between flexibility and reactivity is almost similar to originality and conformity. The difference between the two relative terms has to be distinguished before either of them can be handled in their respective forms.
Flexibility is the employee’s ability to mold him or herself according to the workplace demands while retaining their own work characteristics to do the tasks more efficiently.
Reactivity is the ability to react in a workplace situation which is often the reaction of what is coming towards the person. The person may react positive or negative in these situations.
Time Management Strategies
Time Management strategies play a key role in our exposure to the environment where we must build flexibility, reduce reactivity and in turn boost productivity. More than often the workers or employees have the same amount of time at hand but it is the management of time at hand that determines the productivity of their work.
Individual Time :
Each employee has his or her own characteristic which make him or her a unique asset in the workplace. Most organizations find it economical to design the same kind of work schedule for all the employees, overlooking their work characteristics.
After which a work schedule facilitating the employee is applied to the employee. This will lessen reactivity in the employee as he/ she will have their own work to concentrate on. Reactivity will be reduced as they will have no tiring hours, instead they would be more productive in their task oriented tasks which will yield more productivity.
Manage Your Mental Energy:
For peak productivity, we must tackle our work when we have the mental energy for it. Davis suggests that we identify our two best mental hours, and intentionally schedule our important work during that time.
Prioritize Your Work:
Whenever time management strategies come to mind, prioritization follows. It takes more time to work in a mess than sorting through a mess. That’s the principle for this strategy to work. The worker, instead of focusing on the bundle of work they have, should take a minute to prioritize his/her set of tasks.
Prioritizing tasks will help build awareness and flexibility in a worker regarding his/her task. He/she will also be more thorough and productive in their task performance.
The reactivity is often representative of hostility and tension in the work environment. That is because most employers and employees do not share any time with each other and hence they do not understand the problems and the difficulties that workers face in the workplace.
Instead, if the organization or company concentrates on teamwork and cooperative working, many tasks that are done in a long time may be done in a lesser amount of time hence increasing the productivity of the workers.
