What organizations are doing to improve productivity

No organization has a clear cut method or plan for raising team or organization-wide productivity, but a lot of organizations are trying out different things. The desire to actually create more productive workplaces, more productive teams, more productive individuals and ultimately a more productive organization, is certainly driving organizations to engage in creative activities. Here are a few things we can dwell on:

Iris Ohyama, a Japanese company that sells everything from storage bins and office machinery to gardening tools and pet food, will be creating standing desk workspaces where employees stand to use computer systems for a 45 mins session. They believe this keeps the employees more creative, focused and productive and as a result, will be prohibiting employees from using a PC while sitting down. Of course, exceptions are made for employees with responsibilities requiring them to constantly access a computer system or those with a medical condition making it difficult for them to stand up for long hours.

Getting employees motivated is a great way to boost productivity and many believe it is best done with the gamification process. Now, this works by making something enjoyable out of the task given to employees. Tasks could be designed like role playing games using boosts, rewards, top player rankings, milestones, level ups, point system or anything that is repetitive but clearly shows significant progress from where one started on the tasks. Tasks like weekly reports or idea boosting for future projects and KPIs can be turned into a game to make the work more appealing, enjoyable and exciting.

As with gamification, many other organizations allow absolute control over activities to reside with their employees. Allowing them think about the job and develop ideas to making it better, many believe is the best way to go. Of course in many economic models, there is an idea that productivity is governed mostly by random unpredicated events. This begins to hold stronger waters as more and more organizations adopt the model that bestows more decision making powers on employees in a bid to up their productivity.

There is a lot that can be done, but it all falls on how much trial and error one can do to get a perfect model required to build a more productive organization. If you have tried something different, share with us in the comments.
